Herts Canoe Lifeguards

Herts Canoe Lifeguards are a BCU Lifeguard unit and meet every Monday night from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at HYMB. We welcome new members which is open to anyone over the age of 11.
General canoeing skills and experiences are built upon by training to the BCU Lifeguard Syllabus and recognised first aid qualifications. All members are encouraged to extend their skills and take assessments. Using these skills we provide lifeguard safety for a variety of water based events such as canoeing races, open water swims and triathlons.
For many years we have provided safety cover for The London Triathlon, the biggest triathlon in the world. We have been regular participants of the annual BCU Lifeguard Championships often putting in 2 or 3 teams and are the most successful team in the last 10 years. We also attend the BCU Lifeguard convention and other covers and events run by the National BCU Lifeguard Committee.

Edmonton Canoe Group

Edmonton Canoe Group (BCU affiliated established 1983)
In 2008 we celebrate 25 years of introducing safe kayaking/Canoeing to the community, teaching all aspects of our sport, complementing HYMB-run activities.
Our summer programme starts on the 2nd April through to the end of September. Meeting at the base on Wednesday & Thursday evenings (if it is your first time, please arrive ½ hour early, so that we can show you where everything is) on the water for 7.pm to 9.pm. Saturday morning’s sessions on the water for 10am to 12. Noon, this continues all year around, whilst you continue to come.

For 2008 we intend introducing a Monday afternoon session on the lake from 1pm through till 3pm. It’s for the over 50’s (We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing?) We would also like to invite parents whose children have to be picked up from school, so that they can enjoy some quality time without the kids.
The minimum requirement for all our activities is over 9 yrs old & able to swim at least 50 meters. In addition to the above we have days out on other rivers, weekends away camping & canoeing, introduction to White stuff. If you drive your children to the base, don't just sit there waiting for them. Come for a paddle with us?

During the winter months we operate at The New Edmonton Leisure Centre, The Broadway, Edmonton, N9. (Opposite Edmonton Green Railway Station). Friday evening’s 8-9pm. Negotiations are being made to allow canoeing some other times in the week. This will cater for the shift workers, & others who can make daytime activities. We also use Southgate Leisure Centre, Winchmore Hill Road, London N14 6AD. On Sunday evenings 7.45-8.30pm for general recreation, & 8.15-9.15pm for the fast game of Canoe Polo. All pool sessions must be booked in advance.

There is no need to own your own craft. We actively discourage youngsters from buying their own craft, as boat designs change so quickly. Try as many different boats till you decide which the best is for you. Most boats spend 99% of their life stuck on the grass at home, slung on the shed roof, or hanging up in the garage. If you want to buy something, look at your personal clothing and safety equipment, not boats.
